Overview
Fixed incorrect usage metering data being reported to a third-party metering service. The issue caused inaccurate billing records for Cloud Foundry service instances across different service plans.
The Problem
The metering integration was reporting incorrect usage data:
- Wrong Instance Counts: Service instance quantities were miscalculated
- Plan Mismatches: Usage was sometimes attributed to incorrect service plans
- Timing Issues: Metering events were not aligned with actual provisioning lifecycle
This resulted in discrepancies between actual resource consumption and reported usage.
Solution
Identified and corrected the root causes of the metering inaccuracies:
- Accurate Instance Tracking: Fixed the logic for counting active service instances
- Plan Resolution: Ensured correct service plan identification in metering events
- Lifecycle Alignment: Synchronized metering with service instance create/update/delete operations
Key Changes
- Corrected service instance enumeration logic
- Fixed service plan lookup during metering event generation
- Aligned metering timestamps with actual provisioning events
- Added validation to catch discrepancies before reporting
Technical Approach
- Analyzed metering data against actual service instance records
- Traced the data flow from Cloud Foundry events to third-party reporting
- Identified transformation errors in the metering pipeline
- Implemented fixes with comprehensive test coverage
